A Complete Foundation in FBA and CBM
We’re excited to announce the launch of our new PBS Essentials Series BUNDLE: Understanding Behaviour: Functional Behaviour Analysis (FBA) and Competing Behaviour Model (CBM) — an accessible, practical bundle designed for practitioners who want to strengthen their skills in understanding behaviour and developing effective, person-centred support.
From Functional Understanding to Meaningful Action
A critical part of our role as behaviour support practitioners is to identify and adjust the contextual factors contributing to distressing behaviours. Before we can make meaningful changes, we must first understand the extent and causes of the problem context. Only then are we in a position to set clear, evidence-based goals to address it. How do we do this? By undertaking an evidence-based Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA).
Learn PBS Together’s 6-Step FBA Process:
-
Identify problem contexts
-
Set up effective data systems
-
Analyze the data
-
Formulate an evidence-based hypothesis
-
Develop a comprehensive FBA report
-
Self-assess the quality of your FBA
Once we understand the functional determinants of behaviour, we need to translate that information into practical support. The Competing Behaviour Model (CBM) provides a framework for doing this by helping practitioners organise assessment data logically, select Functionally Equivalent Replacement Behaviours (FERBs), and design effective Competing Pathways.
Throughout the bundle, you will learn how to move from functional understanding to meaningful action — using FBA to understand behaviour and CBM to translate that understanding into person-centred, context-specific support.
The result is a learning experience designed to help practitioners develop a stronger foundation for ethical, effective, and rights-based practice. Whether you are new to PBS or looking to consolidate your foundational knowledge, this bundle brings together two essential courses:

6 HOURS
Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA)
Learn to conduct a four-term contingency analysis and a six-step Functional Behaviour Assessment process to identify functional determinants of behaviour, to develop person-centred, context-specific support plans.

3 HOURS
Competing Behaviour Model (CBM)
Learn to use the competing behaviour model in order to identify assessment-based strategies.

The bundle is designed to provide a coherent learning pathway: beginning with understanding behaviour through contingencies, context, and consequences, progressing to the systematic assessment of functional determinants through FBA, and then applying this understanding through the Competing Behaviour Model (CBM) to develop person-centred, context-specific support.

Practitioner Focused Design
Created by practitioners, for practitioners. Our courses are designed around the realities of professional practice. The courses focus on the knowledge and skills practitioners need to understand behaviour, conduct Functional Behaviour Assessments (FBA), and apply the Competing Behaviour Model (CBM) to develop effective, person-centred support in contemporary practice settings.
Rather than focusing only on theoretical concepts, we connect foundational knowledge to practical decision-making and real-world contexts — helping you understand not only what to do, but how to do and why it matters.

Learn with Experts
Learn from professionals with expertise in Positive Behaviour Support, behaviour analysis, and related fields. Our courses draw on contemporary research, professional practice, and internationally recognised principles to provide learning that is both accessible and relevant.
Whether you are new to PBS or looking to strengthen your existing knowledge, you’ll gain insights that can support more thoughtful, person-centred, and rights-based practice.
Test Your Knowledge and Earn a Certificate
Before starting each course, you’ll complete a knowledge assessment designed to establish a baseline of your current understanding. After completing the learning activities, you’ll take the same assessment again.
The pre- and post-course results are collected to evaluate the effectiveness of the course and measure learning outcomes.
You’ll also have opportunities to review the course content and retake assessments as needed, supporting a learning experience focused on development rather than simply passing a test.
Once you successfully complete the required assessments, you’ll receive a digital Certificate of Completion, recognising your completion of the course and the corresponding 9 learning hours.
Start Your PBS Learning Journey
Whether you are beginning your journey in Positive Behaviour Support or looking to strengthen your professional foundations, the PBS Essentials Series provides a structured and accessible starting point.
Two courses. Nine hours of learning. One comprehensive foundation in FBA and CBM.
Learn the foundations. Strengthen your practice. Promote better outcomes.
